The Real ID Act

Your Deadline For Having your Real ID is May 7, 2025

It may be time to renew your license. Upon checking your license, if you do not see a gold or black star in the top corner, this is for you! That black/gold star indicates that your ID is a “Real ID.” What does that mean? We’re glad you asked. The Real ID Act was passed in 2005 in response to the attack on the World Trade Centers on 9/11. The Act established “set security standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses.”

Is Your Card Compliant?

While the Real ID Act has become widespread, there are still some states that issue compliant IDs without a star. In this case, it is best to confirm with your state if your card is not compliant. If your card says “Not for Federal Identification” or “Federal Limits Apply,” then your card is not compliant with the Real ID Act. Those who plan on accessing a nuclear power plant, boarding any commercial aircraft, or accessing a federal facility after May 7, 2025 will need to obtain a Real ID.

Plan Ahead

Plan on renewing your license well before May 7, 2025. The states will not be able to automatically send individuals compliant driver’s licenses, so it is best to be ahead of the rush. You will need to apply in person and bring identifying documents.
