Flying may be exciting for some and others may choose a different adjective. Some passengers may think having to go through an airport and deal with the crowds can be a hassle, while others may be fearful of flying. This fear can arise because of the heights aspect, or they may have anxiety about plane crashes, even though they are aware that flying is safer than driving. If you are determined to not let this keep you grounded when it comes to your travel plans, follow these steps to help you overcome your fear of flying.

What To Do Before the Flight

If you take the time to learn how the aircraft can fly, why turbulence occurs, how an engine can malfunction and how an airplane can continue to fly with a malfunctioning engine, you can have better peace of mind. Take a look at airplanes and their cabins. When you are constantly looking at the cabin, the sight can become more familiar than scary.

How smooth a flight is depends on the air around the aircraft. Winds, even at higher altitudes, can shift in any direction and is the leading cause of turbulence. A bump here or there is to be expected but is perfectly normal.

When it comes time to buy the ticket and choose a seat, pick an aisle seat. This can help if you are afraid of heights or are claustrophobic. Being away from the window may help you forget how high up in the air you are, and you are able to get up and walk around the cabin without bothering the people in your row. If you are assigned a window seat keep the shade pulled down and focus on a book or video.

At the Airport

You want flying to be a calm experience, so give yourself extra time at the airport. We recommend to getting to the airport at least one hour before your flight. When you are not in a rush, you can get through security and have time to yourself before boarding. The great thing about OAJ Ellis Airport in Jacksonville is the size. Our smaller airport eliminates the large crowds and waiting times, so you will have a relaxing experience while waiting for your flight.

During the Flight

As you board the plane, introduce yourself to the crew. They are the ones who are in charge of your safety, so speaking with them can reassure you their knowledge about the aircraft. When you are familiar with the attendants and the pilot, you will have a more friendly and welcoming experience. Once you are up in the air, listening to your favorite music or an audiobook can help take your mind off the fact that you are up in the air.

OAJ Ellis Airport makes flying convenient. We are located near Jacksonville and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Richlands, NC. We have American and Delta flights departing every day to Charlotte, Atlanta, and other destinations. If you are interested in booking a flight, visit us online today.
