OAJ in Jacksonville NC connects today’s military infrastructure at US Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune with civilian visitors and guests. A place of reunions and departures, it also serves as the heartbeat of Onslow County’s economic development. Since its opening in 1971, passenger counts have consistently grown, from 48,265 in 1971 to 332,335 in 2019.

1969
Federal Aviation Administration approved the final plans for the airport and provide a construction grant. Approval was given to acquire property for the proposed airport. Contract for the construction of the airport was awarded. Resolution to designate Onslow County airport as the Albert J. Ellis airport.
1971
The first commercial flight at OAJ occurred on February 15, 1971. Piedmont Airlines first served customers here. The original models used at the airport were the DC #3, F-27, Martin 404, YS – 11 and Boeing 737.
2015
New passenger terminal building opens on August 18.
2018
Air Traffic Control Tower opens.
