OAJ-ELLIS AIRPORT’S NEW PASSENGER TERMINAL

In 2013, construction began on a new, two-story terminal at OAJ-Ellis Airport. The terminal features over 57,000 sq. ft. of passenger and operational spaces with expanded screening, waiting and boarding areas. It was officially opened on National Aviation day, August 19 2015. The terminal offers second level boarding via covered passenger boarding bridges, new concessions and other passenger amenities commonly found at modern airports. The design of this terminal was inspired by local forestlands, beaches, communities, and water, making it perfect for its coastal location. The new terminal accommodates current demand and growth. The terminal was updated to modern standards of energy and functional efficiency, with the ability to facilitate competition and improve safety and security.

ON THE HORIZON

The terminal project completed in 2015 was the cornerstone of the award winning Terminal Area Redevelopment Program that included new utilities, roadways, aircraft hangars, passenger and executive terminals, and a new air traffic control tower. In the future the airfield pavement will be rehabilitated, new roads, hangars and rental car facilities will be constructed. The airport is exploring the possibility of extending the runway to allow larger aircraft to fly longer distances. The community’s continued support is essential to help OAJ grow which helps create jobs and enhances quality of life.

To help modernize OAJ and to fund certain improvements, OAJ is utilizing Passenger Facility Charges of $4.50 per enplaned passenger at the airport.

WANT TO SEE MORE FLIGHTS OUT OF OAJ-ELLIS?

When it comes to requesting new flights, airlines and destinations, unfortunately, we can only suggest destinations to the airlines since they do the flying. OAJ meets with airlines a few times each year and if there is enough demand we are able to suggest direct flights, such as New York, Washington, etc. The airlines want to see that there is existing demand as well as room for growth before they take the financial risk. If local passengers fly from another city, the airlines don’t credit the demand to Jacksonville. Happy travels!
